After soundly defeating human competitors in two "Jeopardy" quiz show matches, IBM's Watson supercomputer represents all the possibilities-as well as the challenges-computer advances can offer society and the world at large. The knack for processing natural language and for trammeling huge quantities of data that Watson demonstrated in thrashing Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter-two of the show's most celebrated and successful contestants-promises to expand significantly the role of computers as decision-support tools.
