For EMC officials, the decision to integrate flash-based solid-state drives into the company's core product portfolio now rather than wait until later in the year was based on the desire to get into a nascent market before their rivals did. Thecompany announced the move Jan. 14, a good six months or so before most players and analysts in the storage industry expected. How big a deal this move by the storage vendor was depends on who's talking. To EMC officials, it quickly puts them in the lead in a market that is expected to see rapid growth over the next few years. To some analysts and rivals, though, it did nothing more than give EMC a small head start down a path that everyone will be traveling sooner than later. "I think we all knew something was going to happen soon [with regard to flash moving into storage arrays], but I don't think anybody saw this coming [in January]," Mark Peters, an analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group, told eWeek. "It's great to see EMC doing it, too. They're not always the first out of the gate on these things."
