For all the gains the Internet has made in changing the way com-panies do business, one area that's been notably lacking is the prescribing of medications by doctors and the filling of those prescriptions by pharmacists. Handwritten prescriptions hand-carried to pharmacies are still the norm, leading to an estimated 150 million callbacks a year to doctors by pharmacists questioning illegible handwritten prescriptions, as well as 7,000 patient deaths a year due to unforeseen drug interactions, according to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, of Alexandria, Va.
