Solectron is to close its Liverpool manufacturing facility next year with 490 job losses, as part of a company wide re-structuring program. The facility has a long history. It was for many years Alcatel Australia's main manufacturing plant - and before that STC's - and was sold to Australian company, Bluegum Technologies, in mid-1998 as part of an outsourced manufacturing deal, which Alcatel described at the time as the best way of keeping its manufacturing in Australia. Two years later Bluegum was sold to global player, Solectron, which is now rationalising its operations.
