A Possible Factor for B Virus Infection in Macaques

Monkey B virus (BV, biosafety level 4) is an a-herpes virus, harbors macaque monkeys and usually establishes asymptomatic latent infection. Human infection of BV causes fatal dysfunction in central nervous system. Thus, it is essential to monitor and control BV infection in macaque monkey facilities. In Japan, wild/provisioned Japanese macaques inhabit, and contact between these monkeys and people is not rare. It is necessary to survey the prevalence of BV infection in wild/provisioned macaques and also to study how/when macaques are infected. To examine characteristics of BV infection, we performed serotest on macaques at various age in individual cages, breeding colonies in facilities and also in wild/provisioned troops. We also discuss a possible factor participating in BV infection/entry. Anti-BV antibody titer was measured by modified HVP2-ELISA (Mitsunaga et al, Comp. Med. 57: 120-124, 2007) utilizing Herpesvirus papio 2 (HVP2) as an alternative antigen. No infant BV infection was observed. Most juveniles in BV positive groups infected at their age of 2 to 3 years. It was also found that there were BV-free troops among wild/provisioned Japanese macaques. These results suggest that there are complex factor(s), i.e. virus excretion from and virus entry to monkey, affecting BV infection. We further investigate a possible receptor-like factor which participates in BV entry.
