Bone characteristics in laboratory rats

In the Longevity Sciences, it is highly desirable to develop an animal model of the osteoporosis. Currently two systems, DXA (Dual X-ray Absorptometry) and pQCT, (peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography) are applied to the evaluation of the bone characteristics. However, only the pQCT analysis with whole bone survey is practical on the comparison of the bone characteristics among animal species. In addition, DXA data had been accumulated on human beings on both clinical and basic researches. On the DXA analysis, the bone size highly modified the bone mineral density (BMD). This made it impossible to compare the BMD between human beings and laboratory rodents though the bones of these species constituted of the same chemical compounds. The current study tried to seek a new parameter that is able to compare the different bones by the same parameter. The significance of the bone mineral ratio (BMR) will be discussed.
