Changes of the gut environment during cigarette smoke exposure in Wistar Kyoto rats

Many noxious materials contained in tobacco are distributed systemically via the lungs after inhaling tobacco smoke. In this study, to investigate whether the gut environment is affected by cigarette smoke or not, we examined changes in population of micro-flora, concentrations of certain organic acids and the pH of cecal contents in Wistar Kyoto (WKY/Izm) rats following 4 weeks exposure to cigarette smoke. We also measured body weight as an index of systemic effect, and we measured the balance of oxidant/antioxidant in plasma with reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) and Oxy-Adsorbent Test (Oxy). Cigarette smoke exposure caused a significant decrease in both the population of Bifldobacterium and concentration of total organic acid. The decrease in total organic acid levels was founded to be related not only to a decrease in body weight gain but also to an imbalance in Oxy levels with regard to ROM levels in plasma. In smoking group the pH was significantly elevated compared to non-smoking group. In conclusion, cigarette smoke negatively changed the gut environment and those changes may contribute to systemic disorders induced by cigarette smoke.
