Canine X-linked muscular dystrophy (CXMD_J), a dog model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, showed a high serum creatine kinase (CK) levels soon after birth and a high neonatal mortality rate (35%). The necropsy revealed a selective involvement in respiratory muscles. We, therefore, performed Caesarean deliveries and examined the relationship between serum CK levels in cord blood and that in venous blood after resuscitation, in CXMDj (n=11), normal (n=15), and carrier dogs (n=10). The result showed that the serum CK levels in the venous blood were significantly higher than that in the cord blood only in CXMD_J (p=0.00l). We suggested that a shift from placental respiration to pulmonary respiration might trigger the severe damage of respiratory muscles.
