Effects of environmental condition on body temperature and activity of mice

Differences in bedding and nesting materials can influence not only on the animal's health and welfare but also the experimental results. In the present study, the effects of two types of environmental materials and environmental enrichment on body temperature and activity of mice were evaluated. Eight male C57BL/6J mice (5 months old) were used. Telemetric transmitters for body temperature and activity were implanted in the abdominal cavity under anesthesia. Signals of body temperature and activity were recorded continuously at 10 min intervals; all data from both light phase and dark phase were averaged. Mice were housed in plastic cages with 4 different conditions: wood-shavings (WS), WS with enrichment materials (EWS), wire-mesh (WM), and WM with enrichment materials (EWM). Each mouse was housed individually under each condition for 2 days and then transferred to another condition. Both body temperature and activity under all conditions were high in dark phase. Moving activity in WM was significantly higher than that in WS during both the light and dark phase. Body temperature of mice in WM showed a tendency to be lower compared with those in WS. Activity of mice in EWS was 11% higher than that in WS, and that in EWM was 20% higher than that in WM. The enrichments increased activity in mice. Mice performed to fragment the enrichment material probably to make a more comfortable environment. In conclusion, the present study indicated that environmental conditions substantially influenced the physiology and behavior parameters of mice.
