Hair loss on the back in Hatano rats during pubertal period: Relationship between hair loss and aggression

Hair loss on the back is usually found in the rodents. It is probably caused by stress, hormonal abnormalities, fighting, etc. Hatano high- and low-active avoidance (HAA and LAA) rats, which are selectively bred for avoidance behavior in a shuttle-box, are maintained in our institute. HAA rats often show hair loss on the back during pubertal period. Then, the frequency of hair loss on the back was investigated in the 1 and 2 animals/cage groups after weaning. Furthermore, play behavior test at 6-7 weeks of age and intruder tests at 10-11 weeks of age were carried out in male Hatano rats to evaluate relationship between hair loss and aggression. In the 2 animals/cage group, hair loss was found in more than 90% of male HAA rats and 11% of female HAA rats. In the 1 animal/cage group, hair loss was found in 38% of male HAA rats and 0% of female HAA rats. Hair loss was not found in LAA rats independent of housing conditions. In the observation of play behavior, frequency of play-fighting in HAA rats was higher than that in LAA rats. No strain difference to aggressiveness was observed in the intruder test. Since play-fighting was more frequently observed in HAA than LAA rats, the hair loss on the back in HAA rats was probably caused by the increased play-fighting. There was, however, no difference in aggressive behavior between HAA and LAA rats during the intruder test. Since hair loss occurred in male HAA rats under single conditions, further study is needed to evaluate relationship between hair loss and other factors, such as stress and immunological reaction on the skin.
