摘要

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of metabolic disorder including visceral obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Although this disease is not directly life-threatening, numerous clinical studies have shown that metabolic syndrome patients have increased incidence and mortality of cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarction and stroke. To elucidate the pathological mechanisms of this disease and also develop a new therapeutic method for treatment, it is essential to use animal models. Until now, many animal models (most of which are mice and rats) have been used to study each aspect of metabolic syndrome, however, few of them can recapitulate final events, cardiovascular diseases. In this regard, our laboratory has been using rabbits for the study of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis. Compared to the rodents, rabbits have several advantages in terms of their metabolic features and cardiovascular systems.
