LEC rat was developed in the Center for Experimental Plants and Animals, Hokkaido University, about 20 years ago. I would like to discuss about the role of our facility previously displayed as a rat bioresorce center in this symposium. I believe that the discovery of LEC rat was necessarily achieved in our facility. The history of the Center for Experimental Plants and Animals can be traced even before the World War II. For more than a half century, many rat strains have been continuously and systematically established there. In 1975, outbred Long Evans rats were introduced, and inbreeding was started. Using coat color as a marker, two lines were developed; LEC (Long Evans with cinnamon coat color) and LEA (Long Evans with agouti coat color). In 1984, one male individual showing jaundice was discovered among 6 littermates of 24th LEC generation, and that was the start of many important researches using LEC rats as an animal model for human Wilson disease.
