Andreas "andy" b. rechnitzer, who earned his Ph.D. at Scripps in 1956, was an ocean adventurer in the greatest sense of the word. He was a student of Scripps ichthyologist Carl Hubbs, and together they discovered an unusual fish that has long been associated with the aquarium at Scripps. Hubbs and Rechnitzer discovered the black-and-yellow scythe butterfly-fish, Chaetodon faldfer (now known as Prognathodes falcifer). in 1954 in a cove on the eastern shore of Guadalupe Island, Mexico.
