The mitten crab is a hardy creature. Maybe a little too hardy. Since it first was noticed in San Francisco Bay in 1992, the crustacean native to northern Asia has done more than survive a trans-Pacific journey. It has taken over San Francisco's estuary as well as waterways extending into northern California river systems. The crab has caused erosion of the dykes into which it burrows. It fights for habitat space with local crabs and usually wins. It clogs drinking water pipes, and causes no end of vexation to fishermen.
