These words are from the first rec-ommendation of Ocean Sciences at the New Millennium, an extensive nationwide review and forecast of the ocean sciences. This 2001 report focused on curiosity-driven ocean science. But a similar statement applies to the crucial role of ships in many of the new ocean-observing initiatives that form the theme of this issue of Explorations.
