When graduate student Ashley Medin went to Hawaii in September, it wasn't for vacation, but for training in fieldwork among the islands' volcanoes.The trip was a unique chance for Medin to be in the field with Scripps scientists and it was made possible by the fellowship support she received from donor Ellis Wyer For the past four years, Wyer has fully supported a graduate student's first year of study at Scripps. It's support that makes an enormous difference for students during their first, strenuous year of study, when they must complete a full load of coursework, prepare for departmental exams, and select a scientist to be an advisor for their subsequent years of graduate work. Opportunities like field- work and exploration of their own cre- ative scientific ideas are made possible by such funding.
