On may 10, 1962, at a conference in Seattle, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Director Roger Revelle shared a lectern with astronaut John Glenn and Vice President Lyndon B.Johnson. The occasion was the Second National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space. In a speech entitled "Sailing in New and Old Oceans," Revelle gave the oceanographer's perspective on the brand-new era of science exploration. The joint objective of the space scientists and earth scientists "is the highest that science can have," he said.
