摘要

It's 6:30 A.M. and Stephen Bralla is well into his routine. With a scalding beverage from the neighborhood convenience store in one hand and a pastry in the other, he slides easily into a dusty, white pickup truck and heads east from San Diego on Interstate 8. The pickup carries a familiar payload: boxes of equipment assorted tools, a large bag of popcorn, and a cooler full of cold drinking water. After working 16 years at Scripps, mainly as a development technician in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Bralla has perfected this routine. He estimates he has made this trip to the southeastern corner of California more than 600 times. He typically visits either the Cecil and Ida Green Pinon Flat Observatory or an instrument site at Durmid Hill near the Salton Sea, both located in the Imperial Valley. Sometimes, as is the case this day, he needs to visit both sites.
