United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has taken delivery of the 18,800 teu Barzan from South Korea's Hyundai Samho shipyard based in Mokpo. The leviathan vessel now holds the title of world's most environmentally friendly ultra-large container ship as well as the longest vessel in the world currently in service. The eco-efficient container vessel has a CO_2 emission output/teu that is more than 60% below the A.13 (13,500 teu) vessels delivered just three years ago. The DNC GL-classed vessel is the first of a batch of six A.18 (18,800 teu) vessels that will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency due to their optimised vessel design and an array of propulsion and equipment efficiency features. Preliminary calculations indicate an Energy Efficiency Design Index value that is close to 50% below the 2025 limit set by the International Maritime Organization.
