摘要

A ballast system aimed at vessels with low ballast requirements has been developed by Dutch dredging specialist Van Oord. Unlike systems that rely on UV or chemical means to achieve disinfection, the Van Oord system, which was given Basic Approval at MEPC 65 and is almost sure to be granted Final Approval at MEPC 66, makes use of a novel approach that has been mooted many times but until now not transformed into reality. Designed for ships such as dredgers with a minimal ballast capacity, and which do not ballast regularly, the system makes use of potable water supplied from shore or generated onboard. Under most normal circumstances, potable water supplied from shore would not contain any organisms larger than 10 microns. However, a secondary treatment system, using commercially available chlorine added to achieve the maximum concentration of 5mg chlorine per litre of ballast water, may be needed under some circumstances and to meet IMO requirements.
