While concern is growing that fuel-efficient ships could make steam turbine-powered ships obsolete, DNB Bank sees challenges in retrofitting older LNG carriers. Based on engine maker Wart-sila's setup, DNB Bank estimates converting a steam turbine-powered ship into tri-fuel diesel-elec-tric ships could cost $50M. "This option would make sense for vessels that may have 25+ years of remaining life, and is likely to be more attractive as turbine vessels are forced out of the market due to lower fuel efficiency," said DNB Bank. "However, there are several potential bumps in the road: if the vessel's boil-off is too high, this limits operational flexibility (as the boil-off has to be burnt); and yard capacity could also be an issue." Since 2000,172 out of 295 LNG carriers built have been turbine-powered LNG vessels.
