A New Hampshire university and its partners in the private sector are making quiet but steady progress in taking ocean floor mapping to a new level of transparency for commercial shipping. The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/ JHC) at the University of New Hampshire is using the latest digital technology, as the foundation for its "Chart of the Future" project that the centre believes will ultimately improve maritime safety. "What we've been working on is providing full, three-dimensional situational awareness of what's under the surface and presenting it in an intuitive way," CCOM/JHC director Larry Mayer told IHS Maritime Technology. The CCOM/JHC was founded in 1999 to develop tools to advance ocean mapping and hydrography, and to train the next generation of hydrographers and ocean mappers. The JHC is a cooperative partnership between the University of New Hampshire and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It aims to create a national centre for expertise in ocean mapping and hydrographic sciences. CCOM, a complementary university centre, expands the scope of ocean mapping collaboration with the private sector, other government agencies, and other universities.
