Austal is claiming a new record speed for a diesel-powered fast ferry after the 65m Auto Express catamaran ferry Shinas notched up a peak speed of 55.9kt during sea trials. Built for the Sultanate of Oman, the vessel's confirmed service speed of 52kt exceeds contract requirements by 1 kt. The new vessel adds to Austal's list of record-breaking vessels, which includes the 88m Villum Clausen, current holder of the 24-hour distance record for a commercial passenger vessel (1,063nm at an average speed of 44.29kt, set in 2000).
