In January, the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) joined with the World Shipping Council (WSC), International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and BIMCO in an effort to encourage the IMO to amend the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) so as to resolve the thorny question of container weights. They are calling for it to be a legal requirement - a condition for stowing a loaded container on board a ship - that the ship and the port facility have a verified weight for the container. All four organisations have consultative status at the IMO.
