A three-year European research project, part funded by the European Union, will look at how crew can reduce maritime accidents through better interaction with machines on the bridge. Almost 80% of collisions and groundings occur because of a failure to use bridge systems properly. The project uses safety-based scenarios to investigate bridge procedures. The researchers will use CASCADe, (Model-based Co-operative and Adaptive Ship-based Context Aware Design) to develop an adaptive bridge system that will recognise, prevent and recover from human errors. The main outcome will be a new human-centered design methodology that will support the analysis of agent interactions at early design development stages.
