The European Commission (EC) ruled on 17 July that tax benefits to Spain's shipyards under Madrid's former ship finance tax-lease scheme must be recovered. In so doing, the EC ignored final pleas from the Spanish government and shipbuilding industry. The lobbyist body for small and medium-sized yards, Pymar, had warned that such a repayment order would cause the annihilation of Spanish civil shipbuilding -and 87,000 jobs.
