According to the latest IHS Fairplay data, Japanese shipbuilders completed around 18% of vessels delivered worldwide during 2012 in gross tonnage terms. Japanese production in this period saw a total of 5 7 5 vessels (of 100gt+), with an aggregate tonnage of almost 17.5M gt delivered. However, this output represents a reduction of 14% when compared to the peak production reached two years previously. Meanwhile, the Japanese share of the present newbuilding orderbook also appears to be in decline.
