Anew generation of multipurpose ro-ro container vessel is being introduced by Bahri, formerly known as the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (NSCSA), to meet the evolving needs of the liner service between North America's eastern seaboard, the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, and Indian subcontinent. Bahri Abha, the first in the series of six 26,000dwt linehaul ships, was commissioned in February and has since been followed out of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard by second-of-class Bahri Hofuf. The newbuilding sextet will replace the company's four larger con-ros, delivered by Kockums in 1983, two of which have already been sold for recycling. Bahri Abha and its sisters embody a design with a stronger accent on ro-ro and project cargo and far less provision for containers than in the 42,000dwt Swedish-built vessels.
