Japan's quantitative easing policies has sent the yen below 100 to the dollar for the first time in five years, but despite this, newbuilding prices have continued to rise, a Norwegian investment bank and shipbroker has reported. Jorn Bakkelund and Ole Gustav Eriksen, analysts at RS Platou Economic Research in Oslo, said: "While the weaker yen certainly has helped Japanese builders become more competitive and thus enabled them to secure more export orders, it has not impacted the overall newbuilding price level, which has increased somewhat in recent months. "While Japan's cost position versus [South] Korea has improved markedly, Korea still remains the marginal cost producer of Asia's Big Three," noted the analysts, who estimated that Japan's cost level now almost matches that for Korean builders.
