Tempestuous waters and ravaging winds derail the timetables of so many offshore projects, leading to increased costs and potential delays in completion. Global installed offshore wind power capacity stands at 4.2GW, of which over 91% is in Europe (see map). Indeed, the United Kingdom's London Array, inaugurated in July, is the world's largest windfarm, with 630MW capacity. With the global offshore wind industry expected to reach nearly 95GW of installed capacity by 2025, according to figures from IHS Emerging Energy Research, maintaining the infrastructure to provide constant electricity is trying, as working and transferring equipment and people offshore requires a certain degree of platform stability for safety and efficiency. For windfarms situated far from the coast, the acute challenges are greater water depths, corrosive salt water, strong currents, visibility, and heavy swells.
