Bad economic times affect all ship types to a greater or lesser degree, but in the dry cargo sector it is the highly specialised ship types that are likely to be hit hardest. With less cargo available large ships either become difficult to fill or fewer of them are required. In such times, smaller vessels can come into their own and especially so if they are able to switch between cargo types and sectors at will. General cargo ships can do exactly that.
