Widely described in the media as the Titanic of the 21 st century, the Costa Concordia tragedy has probably resulted in more than 30 deaths and brought into question much of the safety regulation that has been enacted in recent years. Reaction from within the cruise sector and at the IMO has been swift, with operators keen to repair the commercial damage done to their sector and the IMO reacting perhaps to criticism of current regulations and the slow pace of safety reforms. While it is the cruise sector that is taking the immediate hit, it should not be forgotten that ferries are also passenger ships and there are implications for that sector also, in terms of management, operation and future regulation.
