Offshore Deepwater Drilling operator Seadrill has announced that it has contracted two ultra-deepwater drillships from South Korean shipyard Samsung HI, booked for delivery in 1Q and 2Q/2013. Seadrill holds options fortwo further units of this type, the Bermuda-based company said. Total project price per rig is estimated to be less than $600M, which includesa turnkey contract with the yard, project management, drilling and handling tools, spares, capitalised interest and operations preparations. The dynamic positioning, dual-derrick vessels have been specified to operate depths of up to 3,600m and will have a hook toad capability of 1,130 tonnes. The yard previously built three drilling ships and two semi-submersible platforms for Seadrilf, which were delivered between 2008and 2010.
