Although innovation and product development is believed to have slowed down, many companies were very active in these areas during 2010. For example, AkzoNobel subsidiary International Paint (IP) in Gateshead, UK, launched four products in the year. In January 2010, the company brought out a new range of universal primers for the newbuilding market. IP argues that shipbuilders and owners can now better choose how they meet productivity and performance targets and comply with the IMO's PSPC and new regional regulations, such as the EU's Solvents Emissions Directive, which limits VOC emissions.
