Owners are being encouraged to install a dual ECDIS system. Here, the question of true redundancy arises and more importantly elimination of the need to carry paper charts as back-up for a single ECDIS.rnMany owners are unsure as to what constitutes a dual ECDIS. Does it mean two separate systems - with separate operating systems, power supplies, and so forth - or are they combined in some way? And when applying updates on a dual system, is it necessary to do it twice?rnThe answer is that both options are possible. Some operators may opt for two stand-alone systems but there are benefits from selecting a dual system where redundancy is ensured and also synchronicity.
