Solutions was discussing the volcanic ash cloud recently with some old engineering friends, and a question came up about how high up things originating on the Earth's surface can go in the atmosphere. A quick scan of news and scientific articles on the ash cloud emanating from the Icelandic volcano put its height at anywhere between 5km and 10km at its highest. On that basis, none of it would have reached the ozone layer, which begins at around 15-20km above the Earth.
