A Typical marine diesel engine today has an efficiency of around 50-55% but this could be lifted to nearer 80% as engineers and researchers combine advances in engine design with the extra boost in air pressure made possible by using two turbochargers in series.rnLast month Wartsila and ABB Turbo Systems announced a joint development programme for applying two-stage turbocharging on large diesel engines. In the new engine design, two turbochargers are arranged in series to generate increased air pressure, airflow and a superior turbocharging effect. This results in an efficiency rating of up to 76%. The increased air pressure, combined with the advanced engine technology, improves output and power density by up to 10%.
