Until recently, there has been little independent assessment of the viability of kite ships, the technical and operational risks associated with kite-assisted propulsion, and the extent of fuel savings and hence reductions in emissions they could provide.rnThanks to a study completed by Tristan Chapman, a marine surveyor at Lloyd's Register, owners do at least have more independent data with which to work, allowing them to begin to compare the fuel savings that might be possible and examine how suitable the various types of wind-assisted technology might be for their vessels. The study also provides useful analysis of operational matters - such as launch and recovery of kites - and important safety considerations.
