APL has completed the retrofit of five C-11 container ships to allow them to use shore-based electric power while in port. The ship operator said it would begin 'cold-ironing'ships when they call at its marine terminal in Oakland early next year. By shutting down shipboard generators in Oakland, APL expects to eliminate Nox and particulate emissions. The retrofits were carried out at the Keppel shipyard in Singapore and APL is now electrifying its Oakland berths ready for cold ironing.
