The recent history of kite-assisted propulsion for commercial vessels can probably be traced to SkySails showing off its then fledgling technology at SMM in 2002. At that time SkySails told Solutions that new materials, then only recently available, had helped to overcome the problem of cable weight, which had prevented earlier attempts to develop such a system.
