As the shipping industry comes under continuous pressure from environmental bodies to clean up its working processes while still running a successful business, there may be a degree of working at cross-purposes, but benefits may often arise. Shipowners have always been attracted to ways of cutting fuel use and have learnt that boasting of their green credentials rather than their cleverness at reducing costs earns them public approval. After all, any means of cutting fuel use will automatically bring about a reduction in emissions of pollutants, such as Sox, Nox and particulate matter, and of CO_2.
