Representing a landmark in the rapid development of China's maritime industries, the LNG carrier Dapeng Sun (147,700m~3) was phased into service during 2008. As the first large LNG tanker constructed in China, Dapeng Sun has showcased the country's shipbuilding capabilities in the more sophisticated tonnage categories, while opening a new chapter in the expansion of the country's energy supply pattern and merchant fleet. Five vessels of the Dapeng Sun type, dual-classed by ABS and China Classification Society, were entrusted to Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in support of long-term shipment deals covering imports through ports in southern and eastern China. Dapeng Sun and two sister new-builds from the Shanghai yard will transport LNG from Australia's North West Shelf project to China's first LNG receiving terminal near Shenzhen, in Guangdong province. The two other vessels are scheduled to trade via a terminal on China's east coast in Fujian province.
