As Roger Barrett James, director of international sales and marketing at Unifire, explained, a FiFi system can form the basis of an effective anti-piracy system. A recent innovation in what Unifire calls "non-lethal ship defence" is the company's Anti-Pirate Water Cannon System (APWCS), which consists of a network of high-powered, remote-controlled water cannons that can be controlled from the bridge and/ or another safe area on a ship. This system has been specifically designed to protect ships from pirate attacks.
