Last year China just failed to reach the hugely significant milestone of delivering 1,000 new vessels in a single year. In deadweight terms, the total of 22,063,748 for the 914 ships handed over fell below that of both Korea and Japan, but did set a new record for China.rnIn terms of number of ships and deadweight tonnage on order, China has been on top of the world since last year, but it is still second to South Korea when cgt is the preferred measure. Having pushed so hard to get to the front it is perhaps a little unfortunate that at its moment of triumph the world economic situation has slowed the pace of the Chinese shipbuilding bandwagon.
