Encouraged by the recent shipbuilding boom, several concerns have aspired to develop shipbuilding facilities in the Middle East and India. Initial succcesses with orders for offshore vessels in Gulf yards and a string of general cargo and heavy-lift ships in India appeared to confirm the impression that the two regions would reach new heights.rnThen came the recession and a number of promised orders failed to materialise. Yet others have been cancelled, but there is still optimism for the future. That optimism is perhaps justified, because the ship types being actively marketed are not those most affected by the current malaise.
