A decision to opt for diesel-electric power is one which more and more operators are considering. It involves weighing up the advantages in flexibility against the potential loss of efficiency. In a new vessel, the owner has a choice in both hullform and propulsion, but in conversions that freedom is not always available. When the Dutch heavy-lift specialist Fairstar decided to convert the dumb barge Fjord into a specialist semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel it was faced with a complete hull that came with no engine room, no accommodation and no bridge.
