A 4,300teu container ship rarely warrants the attention of the head of state, but last month President Arroyo of the Philippines performed the naming ceremony for just such a vessel. Argolikos (51,400dwt) was something of a special vessel, being the very first to come out of the Hanjin Subic yard and thus helping to put the country on the shipbuilding map. The yard, located 80km northwest of Manila, has a further 42 vessels on its books worth some $3.8Bn. Of these, 19 are of similar design to Argolikos and are being built for NSC Schiffahrts and CMA CGM. Fully cellular and of Panamax size, Argolikos is 259.8m in length, 32.26m beam and has a draught of 12.6m. Power is supplied by a single Hyundai-built MAN B&W 8K90MC-C producing 36,500kW at 104rpm and driving a single fixed-pitch propeller.
