A major order for dual-fuel engines has been won by the new joint venture between Waertsilae and Hyundai HI in South Korea, Waertsilae-Hyundai Engine Co. The contract announced early last month calls for a total of 16 Waertsilae 50DF engines for a quartet of LNG production vessels to be built by Samsung HI for London-based FLEX LNG. The first engine will be delivered in February 2010. The ships are designed to be used on small fields and stranded gas deposits where conventional methods of recovery are uneconomic. The first two vessels were ordered in March 2007, with a third being added in October and the final vessel ordered in November that year. In March this year the design of the vessels was altered from gas carriers to gas production vessels and the tank capacity raised from 90,000m~3 to 170,000m~3.
