The expansion of maritime trade and new regulations on oil transport that have forced shipowners to supplement and modernise their fleets have stimulated demand for new ships, filling Romanian shipyards. Yet despite operating at full capacity, the yards are still registering low profits, squeezed by the increased price of steel and the appreciation of the local currency against the euro and the dollar, which diminishes sales income. Shipyard managers worry that they will lose ground to competitors in China, Vietnam and India.
