The vast majority of ships are still being built with conventional propulsion systems but more and more operators across all sectors are beginningto appreciate the benefits of switching to electric propulsion. The day when all ships are fitted with electric propulsion is an extremely long way off and conceivably may never even arrive. By far the majority of ships afloat today, along with those under construction or on order, feature the conventional system of engine, shaft and propeller. Adding in a gearbox, multiple drive systems and a choice of an alternative to the bladed propeller in the form of say a water jet or a Voith Schneider to the conventional mix gives a number of permutations that will surely feature at least one to suit any particular vessel.
